SUMMARY:A Right to Know: What Human Trafficking Survivors and Their Advocates Need to Know About Monetary Remedies in the Law
DESCRIPTION:In 2003\, Congress amended Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) to add a civil remedy provision. Most states have now followed Congress’ lead by passing human trafficking laws that also included a survivor’s right to sue. For many years these civil remedy provisions in the law have been underutilized in the fight against the crime of human trafficking. This seminar is designed to serve as an introduction to the civil remedy options available to survivors. \nWebinar Objectives:\n\nWhy should every trafficking survivor consider filing a civil case?\nWhen should a survivor consider filing a civil case?\nCan a civil case be pursued in a trauma-informed manner?\nWho can be sued?\nWhat to expect from the civil justice system?

SUMMARY:Criminal vs. Civil cases: Understanding the Crucial Interplay for Sexual Abuse/Assault Victims
DESCRIPTION:Often\, victims of sexual assault and their families face many uncertainties and difficult choices in the aftermath of an assault\, including whether to hire an attorney and what to expect from a prosecutor versus a civil attorney. One of the most confusing aspects of our justice system is the interplay between the civil and criminal justice systems. This webinar will explain the differences between the two systems\, specifically as they pertain to sexual assault and abuse victims and what victims can expect from each of the systems. Attorneys Dave Ring and Matt Murphy will discuss their experience with both the criminal and civil justice system  through their work and what victim advocates and other victim services professionals need to know when assisting victims of sexual assault and abuse.
